Bravery Award Maggi

We first saw Maggie December 1st 1998 at the breeder’s house.  She stole our heart at first sight, she sat on her hind haunch and held her front paws in a praying position and pawed the air asking for attention.  This was to be daily action of our beloved Maggie. Whether it was for a snack, to go outside, or just attention, she would assume the begging position and paw the air. It always got our attention.

She also had the most unusual method of “peeing”, she would squat like a lady should, but would take the left hind leg and point it straight forward next to the ground. All who would witness this would comment on what an unusual position and laugh. We always knew when she was starting and when she was done. I have not seen another dog do this, it was unique to her.

I had the pleasure of waking up each morning for 12 years, at about the break of daylight, with the gentle little kisses on my cheeks. We would then arise and I would say “lets go, little girl dog” and we would go for our walk so she could assume the “pee” position and our day would begin.

Maggie never went for our daily walks with a leash. If a leash was put on her, she would just sit down in protest and not move. Each day of her 12 years we would walk together, me leading and she following a few paces behind, never altering this arrangement. She never tried to run away or get too far afield. This led to the neighbors giving her the nick name “tag-along”. Maggie never really learned to run; she just hopped somewhat like a rabbit, so she just went along at her own pace. She was master of her domain.

The most overriding characteristic of Maggie was that all who came into contact with her fell in love. She had that indefinable personality that would win your heart at first meeting. Her extended family would number in the hundreds. A true gentle sole with nothing but love for all she met.

The love that this one little girl dog gave us each day for 12 years has enriched our lives more than words can explain, and the emptiness left in our lives, now that she is gone, attest to the love we shared.  Our lives have been made richer and happier by having her for 4,422 days. It was just not enough days.

We so desperately miss our “little girl dog” Maggie.
