My background comes from being a farmer’s daughter and a veterinarian’s wife. My dad had a small dairy when I was young, but it was always custom to have three dogs and as many farm cats as my brother and I could keep away from the backdoor. Later, our lives were filled with horse shows and horse packing in the Sierras. My dad had taken in a horse in exchange of a board bill. It was important to get the horse’s teeth worked on so the vet came out late one evening in the fall. He called me that night to see how the horse was doing. The horse was doing fine; I ended up marrying the vet.

That was thirty seven years ago. As a veterinarian’s wife, it was nothing to be eight months pregnant and find myself climbing over dairy fences in the rain, trekking through mud and such to help my vet with the calving. After the boys were in school, I was in the educational system for almost twenty years as I had earned my Master’s in Education from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I took some time off, and started working with my husband at Standiford Veterinary Center every once in awhile, then more steadily the past three or four years. The girls love it when I address the doctor as Dr. Honey!
