Standiford Veterinary Center is an extraordinary general practice providing a great learning environment for our future veterinary technicians and nurses! Veterinary Technology externship students will receive hands-on training working with small animals. Students will gain experience in understanding the veterinary client patient relationship (VCPR) while working closely with skilled senior level veterinarian and technician leadership.
Program Expectations
Students can expect to learn and assist in performing the following:
- History Notation
- Client Communications
- Physical examination
- Therapeutic plans & therapies (IV Fluids, Drugs, and Physical)
- Surgical procedures and anesthesia
- Diagnostic imaging (radiology and ultrasonography)
- Dental cleaning and evaluation
- Laboratory procedures (Fecal analysis, CBCs, Chemistry, and Urinalysis)
- Preventative care
Program Perks
Externship students will receive an externship start pack filled with technician tools and learning resources. Students will also have access to Learning & Development veterinary technician modules, lectures, and courses in preparation for the VTNE.
Requirements & Eligibility
Our externship program requires students to be enrolled in their second year or equivalent of an accredited veterinary technician program and must commit to no less than 200 externship hours. Candidates applying to the externship must submit a resumé, have strong communication skills, be able to work well with staff and be at least 18 years of age upon acceptance into the externship.
